USB Boot Guide
Boot directly from a USB drive to try any Linux distribution without installing.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Shut down your computer completely.
- Insert the prepared USB drive into an available USB port.
- Power on your computer and immediately start tapping the boot menu key (see below) as soon as the manufacturer logo appears.
- Continue tapping the key about twice per second until the boot menu opens.
- If you miss the timing, restart your computer and try again.
- Select the USB device from the boot menu and press Enter.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to try or install the Linux distribution.
Tip: Start tapping the key about twice per second right after pressing the power button. This is normal for most brands.
Common One-Time Boot Keys
VirtualBox Boot Guide
Run any Linux distribution safely in a virtual machine using VirtualBox.
Prerequisites
- VirtualBox installed on your computer
- Linux ISO image file downloaded to your computer
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Download a Linux ISO image file to your computer.
- In VirtualBox, create a new machine by selecting Machine>New from file menu.
- Name the machine (e.g., "Linux VM") and select the .iso image file.
- A group of 4 buttons appears at bottom right of the window. You can toggle between Guided Mode and Expert Mode.
• IMPORTANT: Ensure that you're in Guided Mode
• ("Expert Mode" appears on the button when in Guided Mode) - Check the box to "Skip unattended installation" and click "Next".
- Assign 4096 MB of memory and one CPU core to the virtual machine.*
- Set the virtual hard disk to 50 gigabytes (an upper limit - does not actually take up the full amount).
- Click next and compare the summary to the one below before you click finish.
Note: You may adjust settings later to optimize performance on your hardware. (The initial choice of 1 core is intentional, as some CPUs exhibit instability when more cores are configured).
